Traveling Across The Stans
You might expect a place labeled as a “stan” to be colorless, shapeless, perhaps flat…

Born on Santorini Island in Greece, raised in San Francisco, Nick Kontis always had a global wanderlust. At age 16, during summers in Greece, he began taking ferries across the Adriatic Sea to Italy and then via rail through Europe. At 18, after many rounds of Sangria, he participated in the annual Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain. At 24, returning to Greece for one last bout of island hopping, he met a couple from Sweden who encouraged him to forfeit his return ticket to the States and travel with them to India — the start of a 15-month trip around the world. When he returned to San Francisco with no job in sight, he launched the first travel agency to specialize in discount around-the-world air fares. Now as a travel journalist, photographer and author, he has visited over 100 countries. His photography has been featured in USA Today. He resides with his wife on a beach near San Blas, Mexico, and keeps the Napa Valley as his California base.
