Off The Beaten Path In Hinohara, Japan
I went to Japan some 40 years ago to write travel articles but ended up…
Growing up in Kansas, Beth Reiber couldn’t wait to get out of Dodge. She got the travel bug at 16 after being chosen as one of a dozen U.S. Girl Scouts to spend one month in Sweden where, to her delight, she learned scouting was co-ed. With degrees in German and journalism, she has worked for a Kansas newspaper, lived in Germany selling freelance travel articles to newspapers across the United States, driven a beat-up Datsun from Yucatan to Canada in search of stories, and edited a travel magazine based in Tokyo. She has visited more than 55 countries, contributed to more than 60 publications and websites, and written nine guidebooks, including Frommer’s guides to Japan for more than 35 years. Although she considers Japan her specialty, she writes about everywhere she goes. People always ask what her favorite destination is, to which she always replies, “The place I haven’t been to yet.” And she decided Kansas wasn’t so bad after all; she resides in the university town of Lawrence.
