Steven L. Raymer is an award-winning National Geographic photographer and author of books on Vietnam, Islam in Southeast Asia and the Global Indian Diaspora. He also is an emeritus professor of journalism at Indiana University-Bloomington, where he presently teaches an honors seminar titled “Witnessing War and Terrorism.” A Vietnam veteran, Raymer served as an artillery and public affairs officer before joining the staff of National Geographic in 1972. He was named “Magazine Photographer of the Year” in 1976 by the National Press Photographers Association. In 1995, he joined the faculty of Indiana University School of Journalism to teach visual journalism, media ethics and international newsgathering. In 2018, Indiana University Press published Raymer’s photographic memoir, “Somewhere West of Lonely: My Life in Pictures.” In 2019, Raymer received the NPPA’s John Long Ethics Award for his career-long commitment to ethical practice in photojournalism and journalism education.
